 Establishment of the Institute

The Institute had its beginnings in 1986, when Dr Isla Lonie, Psychiatrist, Psychotherapist and Past President of the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association of Australia, visited Auckland at the invitation of the staff of the Auckland Family Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre.

Dr Lonie gave a week of presentations and workshops on working with personality disordered clients. Also at this time Dr Lonie encouraged the staff to look towards further contact with colleagues in Australia and subsequently closer links with the PPAA (Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association of Australia) began to develop.

In 1990, Dr Eng Kong Tan, at that time Chairman of Training for the PPAA, came to Auckland to encourage a group of psychotherapists to develop a formal training in Pychoanalytic Pychotherapy here in Auckland.

The group of ten founding Clinical Members, mostly all from the staff at AFCP began to meet regularly to pursue a four-year didactic and experiential training. The Institute was formalised at its first General Meeting was held in November 1992.

Members of the group were then eligible to attend the P.A.A Annual Conference each year.  Overseas visitors were and stil are hosted several times each year, and as much as possible training events were/are open to a wider Psychotherapy Community.

Following the initial four year training course NZIPP then set up its first training programme open to eligible Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists in Auckland.  Subsequently four such training courses in advanced training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy have since been offered, the most recent ending in 2009.  NZIPP course is fully accredited by the PPAA.
